A car wash made of glass could soon be built in Keller if council approves the item Feb. 19.

A unanimous vote by the Planning and Zoning Commission Jan. 28, recommended approval for Fender’s Car Wash, a 5,185 square-foot automatic car wash with self-service vacuum stations, to be located at 1750 S. Main St.

Applicant Billy Ricketts assured commissioners this would not be just another car wash, but rather something unique and “a building like no others.”

“At night time you see the bones of the building, you see the architecture inside and out,” Ricketts said. “I think it’s artwork.”

Ricketts said he has been looking at similar car wash buildings in other cities for about three years. He said the business, which will have a classic car theme, will be a good place for classic car rallies and hot rod club events.

“We didn’t want a block tunnel that you see 95 percent of the time,” he said. “We wanted something that you drive through and feel comfortable in, you don’t feel enclosed ... We are really trying to do something different and bring something different to the table.”

Commissioner Arelyn Cox said the applicant certainly met that goal.

“Well, this building is very unusual,” Cox said. “But I think it’s going to be neat.”

During a public hearing, Bill Stonaker, landowner of the adjacent property, spoke in favor of the project.

“We studied Mr. Ricketts plans and we would like to ask for your endorsement,” Stonaker said. “We think it would be a great asset for the area. It is certainly going to be different.”

Stonaker said the land he owns is occupied by Caliber Collision car repair center.

“Caliber approves it also,” he said. “We think we will be able to use his car wash with the collision center.”
