Byron Nelson wrestlers take second at district meet

The Byron Nelson wrestling team finished second behind Azle in the District 5-4A wrestling meet completed on Saturday.

More importantly, the Bobcats qualified 11 wrestlers to compete in the Class 4A Regional Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Frisco Heritage.

Among those taking championships was Nelson’s 152-pounder Kody Collins. Other Bobcats qualifying for the regional meet were Cassidy Collins, 3rd, 106; Tyler Glueck, 4th, 113; Jason Steele, 3rd, 120; Billy Green, 3rd, 132; Julio Mendoza, 4th, 138; Blake Bunce, 2nd, 145; Jimmy London, 3rd, 160; Jayson McGilvray, 4th, 170; Kevin Stillwell, 2nd, 195; and Ben Stathatos, 3rd, 285

Central, Keller, Timber Creek, Northwest go 1-2-3-4 in district swimming

The District 5-5A swimming and diving meet was concluded last week and Central, Keller, Timber Creek and Northwest finished second, third, fourth and fifth in both boys and girls divisions, respectively

On the boys side, Fossil Ridge took sixth, while the Lady Panthers took seventh.

Carroll finished first in both divisions.

The top six finishers in each event move onto regional competition, which will be held later this week at the Keller ISD Natatorium. Thursday will be the diving competition, with Friday and Saturday being the swimming events.

Area wrestlers named to the All-District wrestling team

Prior to the District 4-5A wrestling tournament, the District Duals All-District First and Second Team selections were announced.

Named to the team are: 106 pounds: Hakim Sims, Fossil Ridge First team; 113: Damian Heard, First team and Lower Weight Outstanding Wrestler; Chandler Floyd, Northwest, Second Team; 120: Trevor Marshall, Northwest, First team; Kareem Simms, Central, Second team; 126: Qu’Ron Simms, Central, First team; 132: Gilbert Guerrero, Northwest, First team; 138: Francisco Torres, Northwest, Second team; 145: Dylan Tolliver, Central, First team; 160: Ashton Touchet, Fossil Ridge, First team; 170: Adam Morales, Northwest, First team; 182: Phil Young, Keller, First team; 220: Bryan Baker, Fossil Ridge, Second team; Heavyweight: Tyrece Boone, Timber Creek, Second team.

Keller continues drought on ice

Keller dropped a 2-0 decision to Garland/Bishop Lynch in hockey action last Thursday. The loss dropped Keller to 3-12 and 2 overtime losses in the Varsity West division. They are back on the ice Thursday to take on Highland Park.

Denton County goes to .500

Denton County’s hockey team went to 8-8 and 1 overtime loss with a 4-3 overtime win over Grapevine/Colleyville.

Dylan DeRozario scored two goals in the second period for Denton County before teammate Bryce Vezner scored again in the third.

Grapevine/Colleyville scored twice in the third period to take the game into overtime. That’s when Andrew Johnson sealed it for Denton County on an assist from DeRozario and Brad Duggan.

Coppell is up next for Denton County on Thursday.
