FORT WORTH -- Although their teachers had to work, Fort Worth students got a day off from classes Friday, and hundreds traveled downtown to have free eye exams and pick out glasses.

Kids Vision Fest 2013, for children 5 to 12 from low-income families, included vision screenings by 20 volunteer optometrists and an ophthalmologist at the Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus.

Organizers said 916 children were screened, 790 got comprehensive exams and 685 were prescribed lenses. Also, the ophthalmologist, Dr. Everett Moody, arranged for 19 to get further exams, with six possibly needing surgery.

Children got to pick out frames that will be fitted with lenses and delivered to their schools in coming weeks, organizers said.

The event was sponsored by the Alcon Foundation, the Essilor Vision Foundation, TCC and the Kids Vision for Life Coalition -- Tarrant County.
