The Birdville school district has a bond committee working on a proposed package that might go onto the May 2013 election ballot. The package includes closing of a local school.

The reasoning behind the decision to close a school is that it would be part of a package that would benefit the entire district.

However, closing any school sends a completely different message. It says to students, "In order for other students in BISD to have improvements to their buildings, we will have to bus you to another building."

It says to the parents, "Even though we are giving you a burden by having you get your children to do this, we do want you to pay the higher taxes, too."

The bond committee is sending the message that it is sacrificing some students for other students. This is a good strategy in chess, but not in education. We need all of our students to get the best education to win.
