The driver of a car that veered out of control and crashed at an assisted living center on White Settlement Road was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:17 a.m. Friday, authorities reported.

Karen Coates, 58, of Fort Worth was identified by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office, which did not rule on the cause or manner of her death.

The car was westbound when it hit a utility pole and then a rock wall that supports an awning at the Fireside Lodge Healthcare Center at 4800 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth police spokesman Daniel Segura said.

The crash knocked out power to several businesses, according to several people in a crowd of onlookers.

Patty Keiner, who lives nearby, said she heard the crash from inside her home.

"I heard what sounded like an explosion, then another one," she said. "It sounded like a sonic boom."

Coates was alone in the car. Police continued to investigate the cause of the crash, Segura said.
