FORT WORTH -- Since July, at least 6,000 gallons of untreated sewage was discharged from a locker room in the newly renovated Amon G. Carter Stadium at TCU and flowed to a nearby creek that feeds the Trinity River, TCU officials confirmed Thursday.
Repairs were made last week after the problem was discovered and reported to city and state environmental officials, TCU spokeswoman Jenny Sanders said.A sewer line was mistakenly connected to storm drains during a locker room renovation, Sanders said. The locker room work was done after major renovations were completed last year.Sanders said university officials didn't notice the problem until last week. "Another project was under way when the problem was discovered," she said."We then determined the source and began working to correct the problem."Officials with the Texas Commission on Environment Quality reported last week that the quantities of discharges were "periodic, only during the use of the locker room," according to their report.The agency also reported that "the discharge point has been inspected, with no visible sign of sewage, only water."Earlier reports indicated as much as 22,000 gallons entered the creek, but Sanders said that estimate was revised."The university has verified that the estimate is closer to approximately 6,000," she said. "Authorities have inspected the work and there does not appear to have been harm to the water quality or eco-life."Fort Worth investigators were satisfied with the results."They stopped the discharge and self reported to us and TCEQ," city spokesman Bill Begley said. "Our investigation showed no adverse affect on the water. Re-inspection showed it had been properly re-plumbed.
