A Grand Prairie man was arrested Thursday afternoon on suspicion of killing the mother of his three small children on Tuesday, police said.

Christopher Darrell Jefferson, 31, was arrested at about 3 p.m. in Dallas, according to a news release from Grand Prairie police.

He was being held Thursday evening in the Grand Prairie Detention Center. Bail was set at $1 million, said Det. Mark Beseda, police spokesman.

Officers responded to a shooting call shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 2000 block of Eva Street.

Latoya McGowan, 24, and her mother were found wounded at the address, and both were taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center.

"During the investigation, it was determined that the suspect shot the mother of his children, as well as her mother," Beseda said in a news release. "During the shooting, the children were present and witnessed (the) suspect shoot both mom and grandma."

Beseda said he did not have the ages of the witnesses, but he did describe them as "three small children."

McGowan later died at the hospital, but her mother was treated and released, Beseda said.

After the shootings, police speculated that Jefferson might be in the Dallas-Fort Worth area or possibly Waco. No details were available early Thursday evening about his arrest in Dallas.

Investigators determined that the shootings occurred after a dispute, but the case was still under investigation, Beseda said.
