A Grapevine man pointed a shotgun at police officers and then shot himself in the head Wednesday night, police said.

The 32-year-old man was in critical condition Thursday at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

Officers were sent to a residence in the 2700 block of North Grapevine Mills Boulevard about 10:15 p.m. Wednesday to make a welfare check. The resident there was threatening to harm himself, according to a statement from Grapevine police.

The man was standing at the top of the stairs inside his apartment when he pointed a shotgun at the officers, police said. Both officers fired at the man, who retreated into his living room. He was not struck by the officers' gunfire, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter around the apartment and, while waiting for other officers to arrive, they heard a gunshot inside, police said. A short time later, the man walked outside and surrendered to authorities.

He had what apparently was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

The shooting remains under investigation.
