FORT WORTH -- An allegedly suicidal man who had barricaded himself inside a residence in south Fort Worth Thursday morning was shot by police after pointing his weapon at officers, police officials said.

The shooting occurred this morning in the 800 block of Forest Grove Lane near Crowley.

SWAT officers had been on the scene as negotiators tried to talk the armed man into surrendering. Police did not identify the man.

"He was coming in and out of the house," said officer Daniel Segura, a police spokesman. Segura said preliminary reports indicate that, at some point, the man "came out of the house with a weapon and pointed it at the officers."

Though police officials initially reported that gunfire was exchanged, officer Sharron Neal said Thursday afternoon that investigators have determined that the suspect did not fire his gun.

The man was injured in the shooting, returned inside the house for a short time, then emerged and surrendered, Segura said. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital with injuries believed to be non life-threatening, Neal said.

Jamal Williams, who identified himself as the injured man's cousin, stood down the street from the shooting Thursday morning, waiting for police to let him through so he could talk with other family members about what happened.

Williams said family members had called him and told him that his 22-year-old cousin had been shot twice.

"I didn't think he'd do nothing like that. That's crazy," Williams said.

Williams said his cousin suffers from depression for which he takes medication and has had suicidal tendencies in the past.

"He had just got shot like a month ago," Williams said. "Somebody shot him. He was in the hospital for two weeks and then he got out."

Segura said the major case unit is conducting an investigation, which is routine in police-involved shootings.
