Oops: Key call against Mavericks wrong, NBA says

OAKLAND, Calif. -- In a move that made Tuesday's 106-104 loss to Portland even more painful, the NBA admitted that a late-game foul call that went against Dallas and might have cost the Mavericks the game was wrong.

The Mavs brought the ball inbounds with 4.5 seconds remaining and the score tied at 104-104. Guard O.J. Mayo was then whistled for charging into Portland's Ronnie Price with 1.5 seconds left.

LaMarcus Aldridge proceeded to fire in an 18-footer at the buzzer that won the game for the Blazers and tormented the Mavs, who led 69-48 with 8:37 left in the third period.

The NBA's statement on Wednesday on Mayo's charge read, in part: "After review at the league office, the video replay confirmed the play should have been ruled a blocking foul as Portland's Ronnie Price did not get his body directly in Mayo's path prior to him starting his upward shooting motion. Mayo should have been granted two free throws."

The too-little-too-late statement from the league didn't exactly make the Mavs feel any better.

"I don't have any thoughts on it," coach Rick Carlisle said after Wednesday's practice. "It's unfortunate.

"Nothing we can do about it now."

Mayo thought he made a good heads-up play when he drove and made contact with Price. Apparently, the NBA agreed.

"Can we play the 3.3 [seconds] over?" Mayo asked. "How are we supposed to do that?

"I'll shoot two free throws and y'all send it in."

On a serious note, Mayo believes it's high time the NBA put its accessibility to modern technology to good use.

"I just wish they could review that stuff going down the stretch," Mayo said. "Under two minutes, they ought to review everything."

As the Mavs prepare to play the Golden State Warriors tonight, a few players believed that the NBA would have been better off not admitting that the officials made a bogus call Tuesday with the game on the line.

"That's the way it goes," Mayo said. "You really can't say too much without getting a big fine.

"So you've got to just roll with the punches and appreciate they did look over their work and saw where they made a mistake and publicly acknowledged it, and keep moving on."

Mayo knows the Mavs, who led 101-94 with 2:19 left, could only blame themselves for letting the game hinge on an difficult officiating call.

"We should never have gotten to that position anyway," Mayo said. "But it's all good."

No updates on Kaman

Center Chris Kaman missed Tuesday's game with a concussion he suffered in Monday's practice. When asked about Kaman, Rick Carlisle said there wouldn't be daily updates on his condition.

"There won't be any more updates on Kaman, except we'll let you know when he starts practicing," Carlisle said. "When he starts practicing, that'll mean that he's progressed to the point where we can talk about it.

"Other than that, he's out."
