Southlake youth wrestlers take home honors

The Southlake Wrestling Club and Dragon Youth Wrestling Club placed several wrestlers in the Cotton Bowl Nationals Youth Wrestling tournament held Jan. 11-12 at Fair Park in Dallas recently. Over 1,000 wrestlers from over 100 wrestling clubs around the country competed in the tournament.

Placing for the Southlake Wrestling Club were individual All-Americans:

Austin Puzon, J. David Sparks, Devon Collins and Quinn Wilkinson - First place; Brendan Noetzel - Second place; Isaac Ferris and Jacob Ferris - Third place; Andrew Bruster and Tyler Brewster - Fourth place and Preston Decker - Sixth place.

Dave Lehman is the team coach, with youth-parent coaches Chris Collins and Steve Noetzel. Eric Robinson and Kim Robinson serve as club leaders.

Southlake Wrestling Club is open to area youth, ages 5-18.

Dragons lose second place in 3-1 loss

The Carroll hockey team lost to second-place Coppell, 3-1 last Thursday, leaving the Dragons a point behind the Cowboys in the Varsity West division. Jesuit remains atop the division, four points ahead of Carroll, and three points ahead of Coppell.

Griffin McManus scored the first and only Carroll goal of the game in the first period on an assist from Connor Beall.

Coppell scored the leveling goal in the third period and then added the decisive and sealing goals.

Carroll will faceoff with Birdville on Thursday at 7 pm at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Euless.

CCA seniors honored

Covenant Christian Academy seniors Christopher Shurtleff, Benjamin Goff and Austin Troup were honored recently for their academic and athletic accomplishments. They were among a select few area high school football players who had been recognized during the season as "Sports Day High School Heroes" by the Dallas Morning News.

Grapevine/Colleyville wins in shootout

The Grapevine/Colleyville hockey team fought for a 5-4 shootout win over Allen last Thursday in the AT&T Metroplex Hockey League.

Grapevine/Colleyville came back from a 4-1 deficit in the third period to secure the overtime period.

The scoreless extra period set up Landon Huber's winning goal in the shootout.

Others scoring for Grapevine/Colleyville were two goals by Trey McMillen (Chris Finn assist on each), Ethan Smith (McMillen), and Spencer Stuckeman (Riley Smith).

Northeast Tennis group adopting military unit for assistance

The Northeast Tarrant Tennis (NETT), is assisting an "adopted" military unit by creating care packages and sending the unit portable tennis equipment.

The US Tennis Association's Military Outreach Adopt-A-Unit Program will send a unit deployed to Afghanistan portable tennis equipment for them to enjoy in their rare down time, NETT said in a press release.

NETT hopes they learn a love of tennis and will continue to play the game when the 29-member unit returns home.

NETT is celebrating "Serving Tennis for Twenty Years" in the Northeast Tarrant County area this year.

NETT will also send boxes full of items such as beef jerky, Keurig K cups and lip balm.

NETT is hosting a Packing Party to assemble all the goods into boxes to mail.

This will be held in conjunction with their team captains' meeting on Feb. 6 in Southlake.
