Dear Editor,
The 82nd Legislature cut K-12 education funding by $5.4 billion. Over 12,000 teachers lost their jobs; classrooms are crowded. Comptroller Combs says there will be $8.8 billion left over from the last biennium. The Economic Stabilization Fund will grow to almost $12 billion. Yet the House and the Senate's proposed budgets do NOT restore the cuts to education funding. Other problems remain: Robin Hood, Target Revenue & the Business Franchise Tax (this was supposed to make up revenue for the property tax reduction in 2006 but never did).Senator Wendy Davis, who filibustered during the last session to try to stave off these cuts, has been removed from the Senate's Education Committee. Senator Dan Patrick, the new chair of the education committee, has not spoken in support of restoring funding to public ed.Texas' top leaders are not providing for the future of the state, its students. Please join me in contacting our legislators to demand appropriate funding for public education.Sue Armstrong Carroll trusteeSouthlakeHave more to add? News tip? Tell us
