Obama no Lincoln

As pundits compare the coronation of Mr. Obama to a third inauguration of Abraham Lincoln, I am repulsed that the two presidents could be considered in the same breath.

Lincoln sought to unite a nation, long divided by philosophical differences and war in a manner that embraced reconciliation, not divisiveness. Through all means possible, he reached out to his political and war-time foes to bring about reunification.

Obama relishes "my way or the highway" politics and refuses to engage Congress in any meaningful manner, except to ridicule from the bully pulpit.

Lincoln never shied away from his responsibilities as leader or castigated others as the cause of the nation's woes. Mocked by many because of his gangly appearance and folksy ways, Lincoln was nevertheless our greatest president and leader.

Any comparison to this giant, especially with the current White House occupant, demeans Lincoln's unequalled legacy.
