The St. Louis Rams have hired Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator, ESPN and NFL Network reported Thursday, citing sources.

Ryan was fired as defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 8.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the lack of turnovers under Ryan was why he was dismissed.

Revis on block?

John Idzik, the new general manager of the New York Jets, did not answer questions about a report that the team will explore trading cornerback Darrelle Revis, who is recovering from a serious knee injury.

Revis, who has held out of training camp twice and nearly did again before last season, has a contract that voids after the 2013 season.

The Jets also can't use the franchise or transition tag on him; they agreed to that clause in the current deal. So there's some concern the team won't be able to re-sign Revis and would prefer to get something back for him rather than lose him as a free agent next winter.

"I think it's way premature to say anything specific," Idzik said.

An angry Revis took to Twitter on Thursday afternoon, saying he was "speechless" about the trade rumors but was "more upset for the jet nation for having to go through this!!!"

The cornerback also added: "I guess we'll see how this plays out."

Meanwhile, coach Rex Ryan officially announced the expected hirings of Marty Mornhinweg as his offensive coordinator and Dennis Thurman as the team's defensive coordinator.

Briefly

Browns: Brian Baker, who spent the past two seasons as defensive line coach with the Dallas Cowboys, will coach Cleveland's outside linebackers.

Packers: Running back Cedric Benson was cited for letting his dogs run loose and attack a neighbor's livestock in Manitowoc County, Wis.

Ravens: Safety Ed Reed isn't planning on joining teammate Ray Lewis in retirement after the Super Bowl. "I'll be playing next year," Reed said Thursday. There was speculation that Reed, 34, might retire.

Saints: Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was fired after one season.

Texans: Former Houston quarterback Case Keenum and former Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee are among eight players signed to reserve/future contracts.
