When Cody Teel drew a rapid-fire spinning bull named Snake during the second round of the Fort Worth Stock Show's Bulls' Night Out performance on Tuesday, the South Texas cowboy knew he would face a big challenge.

Last April, Teel rode Snake for a score of 87 to win the first round of the Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge at Fort Worth's Cowtown Coliseum. While competing before more than 5,700 fans at Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum during a sold-out performance on Tuesday, Teel turned in a 90.5 on Snake, which is owned by the Wild Card Rodeo Co.

"I was happy to have him, but just because you ride a bull the first time, he's still a challenge," Teel said.

Teel took the lead in the Bulls' Night Out title race with a two-ride score of 177.5, 2.5 points ahead of second-ranked Chandler Bownds of Lubbock.

Teel, of Kountze, is the 2012 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association champion bull rider. He clinched the title at the Dec. 6-15 National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

Corey Maier, of Timber Lake, S.D., won the first round with an 88 aboard a former NFR bull named The Grinch, which also is owned by the Wild Card Rodeo Co. Maier was bucked off during the finals. During the 2012 NFR, The Grinch helped Cody Whitney win the Dec. 7 second-round performance.

During Tuesday's final round, Cat Ballou, the 2012 PRCA Bull of the Year, was in the draw. The bovine, owned by 4L & Diamond Rodeo Co., bucked off Tanner Byrne in 2.6 seconds.

Bulls' night off

More than 99 percent of the time, the bull that's featured in the Cowboy Poker specialty act will bolt quickly into the arena and charge the card table, and the four contestants sitting around the table instantly will spring from their chairs. The last man to get up wins a nice cash prize, and his courage to sit tight is a big hit with fans.

But during Tuesday's Bulls' Night Out performance, no one got up because the "fighting bull" never charged into any of them. Finally, the bull was driven out of the arena. After failing to perform, that bovine may be on the next Burger King menu.

Taking up slack

The Fort Worth Stock Show PRCA Rodeo's tie-down roping slack performance, which features the overflow of competitors who are not scheduled to compete in the main shows, begins at 9 a.m. today. The field includes 10-time world all-around champion Trevor Brazile and defending world champion Tuf Cooper.
