ARLINGTON -- With two starters out with sprained ankles and two other post players out because of a concussion and an illness, Arlington Bowie coach Kelly Carruthers needed Kayla Brown and some young players, recently called up from the junior varsity, to step up Tuesday night.
Brown contributed 15 points, seven steals, and six rebounds as the Volunteers maintained their position at the top of the District 3-5A standings with a 37-25 victory against Weatherford at Bowie High School .
Weatherford (19-10, 6-4 3-5A) opened the second quarter with a basket by Abbye Shearmire that gave the Kangaroos their only lead of the night at 6-4.
Brown took over from there as Bowie (25-5, 10-0) went on a 15-2 run to take a 19-8 lead with 2:30 left in the second quarter.
"Kayla Brown ...my captain, my senior, my rebounder, my shooter ...she's just an all-around player," Carruthers said. "If I ever need somebody to do anything she says, 'I can do it coach.' She can run the plays from any position on the floor and is just a solid player for us."
Brown started the run hitting three of four foul shots, and then followed a basket by Emerald Mayfield with two bucket of her own to give the Vols a 13-6 lead.
Racquel Williams and Niniva Taito capped the spree by hitting a 3-pointer each.
Nia Roberts scored all seven of her points in the third quarter to help Bowie extend its lead to 33-17 after three quarters.
Shearmire led Weatherford with nine points with Lou Hawkins adding six more for the Roos.
