Downtown rolls back almost a century Saturday for the Historic Mansfield Roaring 20s Night.

"I'd love to see a thousand people show up in 20s attire," said Steve Cosio, president of Discover Historic Mansfield, which is presenting the event in conjunction with the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The highlight of the evening will be a concert with the Texas Gypsies, a six-piece combo that plays a combination of Western swing and gypsy jazz, performing at 8 p.m. at the Farr Best Theater, 109 N. Main St. Tickets to the event were still available at press time at www.farrbest.com. Prices range from $16-$22.

Discover Historic Mansfield decided to take the group's appearance and turn it into an entire evening.

"We knew we wanted to create an event instead of just a concert," Cosio said. "We try to come up with different events throughout the year."

The evening starts with a free pre-concert party at 6 p.m. at the Mansfield Area Chamber of Commerce, 114 N. Main St., and at Kennedale Mansfield Plumbing, 113 N. Main St.

Mansfield's Gastro Bomber food truck will roll up outside the chamber, while the Fat Truck will be serving Asian/Latin fusion food outside KMP. While food will be available, drinks are BYOB.

Attendees are encouraged to dress for the era, from fedoras to flapper dresses, and even to adopt a 1920s character and name.

Mary Elizabeth Phillips, who co-owns Forgotten Works Garden Gallery along with her husband, Eddie, and is one of the event sponsors, has gotten into the flavor of the party. Her character, Lili Pie, will even be bringing her own brew.

"Lili Pie lives on the outskirts of town and has moonshine," she said. "I actually did make my own. I'm from North Carolina! It's my heritage. But I did not make it in the bathtub. And I'm not selling it."

The event keeps rocking after the concert with an after-party at Steven's Garden & Grill, 223 Depot St., where snacks and bar beverages will be available.
