Hitting facility to be dedicated

The Grapevine High School baseball program will dedicate its new facility at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the Mustangs baseball field, and the ceremony will take on a special meaning.

Grapevine High School experienced a tragedy in 2007 when baseball player Chris Gavora was struck by a batted ball in a batting cage during pre-game warmups. Gavora died two days later.

Five months later, former Texas Ranger Mike Coolbaugh was struck by a line drive while coaching first base for the Tulsa Drillers AA team, killing him instantly.

According to a news release, "out of their tragic circumstances, the Gavora and Coolbaugh families have been resilient, sharing a unique bond and expressing a shared desire to use their loved ones' memory to promote safety in the game of baseball. The manifestation of this shared desire became the Grapevine Mustang Hitting Facility, a new covered baseball/softball practice area that will provide the GHS teams with a safe place to practice year-round."

The facility will be dedicated to the memory of Gavora and Coolbaugh.

Their uniform numbers will be on the building's facade, and plaques explaining how they inspired the facility will be displayed near the building and at the entrance to the fields.
