GRAPEVINE -- A 7-Eleven convenience store is on schedule to open in the downtown historical district in mid-February.

"Everything's going on schedule," said Anthony Bologna, the developer and owner of The Source development company where the store will be located.

The location for the 7-Eleven was approved by the City Council Oct. 16 following weeks of heated discussion from unhappy business owners and months of questions, delays, and postponements.

It will be housed in the One Source building that held a grand opening Nov. 29 for its 12,000-square-foot Phase I downtown business complex. At the same event, The Source developers "broke ground" for a 5,000-square-foot planned Phase II addition to the red brick building located at 520 South Main St.

Bologna said the developers went to great lengths to comply with numerous requests from the city council and the planning and zoning commission, including changing their signage to a more Grapevine historic downtown feel, adapting their hours, and offering a 'market' or 'boutique' concept that would offer more fresh vegetables and other upscale products.

Margaret Chabris, a 7-Eleven spokeswoman, said the corporation "can tailor the product to what the customers in the area need."

She said 7-Eleven "really likes a downtown walkup location," such as the one planned for Grapevine.

"Downtown clientele are big fans of fresh food, whether they are having lunch or eating on the go," Chabris said.

Construction of the 2,000-square-foot 7-Eleven began Jan. 7. It features high ceilings, exposed AC and stained concrete floors.

Bologna said the store can be stocked within three days once construction is complete.

Chabris said the new location will bring to six the number of 7-Elevens in Grapevine. Marty Sabota
