Regarding "Law will help Bushes, Obamas," Jan. 11: This country cannot solve its own financial problems with the national deficit, or decide how to reduce it, but yet the president has time to pass legislation that will extend Secret Service protection for these two presidents and their wives for life.
Our forefathers are rolling over in their graves on what is occurring in Washington. They never intended for our elected representatives to be treated like royalty while in office, or after they left office. The people of this country need to demand that the president and the Congress abide by the same rules that the Congress put out for citizens. For example, people on welfare and Medicaid and veterans must pass a means test. This test requires you to list all of your finances in order for you to be eligible for any social programs being subsidized by the government. If you can afford it, you must pay your fair share. Our current retired presidents and Obama are millionaires. Why should taxpayers provide protection for them the rest of their lives at government expense, especially when they can afford to pay for their own protection?-- Dorothy L.
