Self-employment can create a sense of empowerment. But like every business, self-employed individuals must pay taxes.

A number of websites offer information on tax requirements and planning:

FindLaw: Contains a host of information, including who pays self-employment taxes, tax rates and deduction details. smallbusiness.findlaw.com

Internal Revenue Service: Explains tax obligations, filing and payments. www.irs.gov

National Association for the Self-Employed: Has tax news, forms and assistance. www.nase.org

Social Security Administration: Lays out income tax rules for Social Security and Medicare taxes, deductions and reporting earnings. www.ssa.gov
