HURST -- They still might be screaming and shouting in the Hurst L.D. Bell girls locker room.
The Raiders were able to wear down Colleyville Heritage 50-48 on Friday, and capture their first district win against the Panthers in several years.
A very hoarse Bell coach Brock Pembleton explained the excitement.
"Last time, we lost to them by a point," he said. "The games always seem to come down to a point or two and we have been on the wrong end of the score. Not so tonight. It was all about composure."
The Blue Raiders knew they had to give Colleyville Heritage its first district loss to stay in the District 6-5A title hunt.
Colleyville Heritage (20-10) dropped to 8-1 in district while the Raiders (24-4) are in third at 7-2.
The Raiders trailed 47-46 with 1:25 left, but then took charge of the game.
Junior forward Cierra Johnson drove hard into the lane against Colleyville Heritage's 6-foot-2 post Artavia Ford. Johnson missed the layup but drew the foul.
She drained both free throws to give Bell a 48-47 lead with 14.9 seconds left.
Teammate Channing Taylor then picked off a Panthers pass and was fouled. She hit both free throws to stretch the lead to 50-47.
Colleyville Heritage's desperation 3-point try fell short, but Ford rebounded and was fouled.
She hit her first free throw, missed the second intentionally, and rushed the board trying to knot the score, but her shot hit the side of the rim at the buzzer.
