I read the Sunday article about former Arlington Superintendent Jerry McCullough with great interest. (See: "Arlington documents hint at trouble before the superintendent change")
While I am sure the former superintendent has supporters and detractors, it is obvious the board did not give him a positive job approval rating. Before you start feeling too sorry for him, keep this in mind: He was paid through December by the district for doing nothing, and he was paid an additional $8,605 for service benefits. In addition, by being paid through December, he received another year in calculating his retirement benefits, which should be close to the $235,000 he was receiving from the Arlington school district. The average retirement check sent by the Texas Teacher Retirement System is around $1,800 per month, compared with $19,600 based on a $235,000 superintendent's salary. Now what would a teacher get under these conditions -- a kick in the seat of the pants? How about changing the rules so no district employee would receive more in retirement than the highest-paid teacher?-- Dick Powell, ArlingtonHave more to add?
