Fort Worth Dunbar took over the top spot in District 6-4A Wednesday night with a 68-60 victory over Fort Worth Polytechnic at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center.
The Wildcats (13-9, 8-1) led by as many as eight points in the second half but saw their lead cut to 62-58 with 3:30 remaining. Dunbar pulled the ball out in an attempt to stall, but it nearly backfired as a pair of turnovers created easy scoring opportunities for the Parrots (9-8, 7-2). Polytechnic missed two free throws and blew a layup after the turnovers, though.
"We turned the ball over too many times down the stretch," Dunbar coach Robert Hughes Jr. said. "It was very fortuitous that they missed those shots."
The Wildcats were lucky but Da'Lante Brooks, who finished with a game-high 20 points, hit four free throws and LaByron Walker blocked a shot in the final 30 seconds. Dunbar junior guard Dennis Jones added 19 points before fouling out in the final minute.
Chris Fisher led the Parrots with 18 points and Chris Johnson added 12.
"The team's growing but I'm having the pains," Hughes said. "We have a tough game every night in this district, you have to come ready to play."
