A Richland Hills woman facing trial on an assault charge after she was accused of beating and choking a man because she believed he was gay and had AIDS has died, the Tarrant County district attorney's office confirmed Monday.

Details about the death of Wanda Derby were not available Monday.

"The cases against her were dismissed on Friday," said Melody McDonald, spokeswoman for the office.

According to earlier reports, Derby's adult son was moving into the man's apartment on March 28, which angered Derby, then 72. She was accused of hitting the man with a cane and choking him by shoving the cane against his throat. The man's mother was hit in the face when she saw the attack and tried to help, police said.
