Although I usually disagree philosophically with Bob Ray Sanders, I found his Sunday column, "Eating habits inform my social commentary," enjoyable. That is, until his closing statement that none of his family "needs an assault rifle to kill game."

It boils down to this: Your family has the freedom to choose what type firearm to use to hunt -- a shotgun for birds and a rifle for deer, be it bolt, lever or semi-auto action.

I did not read where family members participate in any of the shooting sports where a semi-automatic carbine has an advantage over any other type firearm.

It is also the ideal firearm to hunt varmints, predators and feral pigs where a quick follow-up shot may be required.

Any firearm can be used for a destructive purpose, and we have numerous laws to deal with that; another will not accomplish anything.
