The Dec. 23 article "Rich-poor gap in education is growing" failed to identify the causes central to a broken public education system, a system costing more and accomplishing less.

First and foremost, parental guidance is a veritable void. Broken homes prevail. Students arrive unprepared to receive instruction. Nor are they capable of functioning in a disciplined environment.

Worse yet, the school system has shifted its focus to social issues rather than education.

Teacher groups are focused on membership and power. Sadly, they harbor unqualified teachers. Responsible parents willingly pay double to send their children to private schools for quality education.

Initiate school choice. The poor and minorities will regain an opportunity to pursue a quality education.
