Dick Siegel, who was Hal Jay's on-air partner at WBAP/820 AM from 1981 to 2003, died Thursday morning, reportedly of a heart attack, the station confirmed by phone this afternoon. WBAP's website has a brief obituary right now, but expect that to expand.

Siegel, an accomplished helicopter pilot -- actually, Jay says Siegel could fly anything -- provided traffic reports for the station, but he, Jay and "Sam from Sales" took things beyond news, weather and traffic with their camaraderie, banter and jokes. The Star-Telegram even had a comic strip called "The Adventures of Hal 'n Dick."

Arrangements are pending, and a full obituary is to come on both DFW.com and Star-Telegram.com. Siegel had been working for KLDE/104.9 FM, an oldies station in Eldorado, a small town about 50 miles south of San Angelo in West Texas.

Star-Telegram contributor (and former staff writer) Mike Lee wrote an excellent profile of Siegel just last August. You can read it here.
