FORT WORTH -- The federal judge presiding over the murder-for-hire case that targeted Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck last spring has recused himself from the case, court records show.

U.S. District Judge John McBryde signed the order Monday, four days before sentencing was to have taken place for Ryan Walker Grant. Sentencing was originally set for Dec. 28 but was moved back a week because the federal prosecutor handling the case was going to be on a family vacation, records show.

McBryde's order gave no specific reason for his decision.

"After having reviewed the presentence investigation report pertaining to the defendant, Ryan Walker Grant, the court has concluded that the court should recuse as to the sentencing of the defendant, and from all further proceedings in the case," the order read.

Grant's attorney, J. Warren St. John of Fort Worth, said Wednesday that he had learned of the move earlier in the day.

"I don't know what his reason was," St. John said.

Records show that the case is now in U.S. District Judge Terry Means' court.
