A 21-year-old woman was killed early New Year's Day when she lost control of her speeding car, which slammed into a signal pole near the Shady Valley Golf Club in west central Arlington, police said.

Sara Habala of Arlington was pronounced dead at 2:56 a.m., the Tarrant County medical examiner's office reported on its website.

Habala was alone in the car, which wrecked around 3 a.m. at the intersection of 1500 Park Springs Blvd. and 4000 Shady Valley Drive, police said. Investigators found that the car was speeding south on Park Springs, slid and hit a pole where the road curves in front of the golf course.

Habala, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said alcohol could have also been a factor in the wreck.
