A 21-year-old driver was killed early New Year's Day when she lost control of her speeding car, which slammed into a signal pole near the Shady Valley Golf Club in west-central Arlington, police said.

Sara Habala of Arlington was pronounced dead at 2:56 a.m., according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's website.

Habala was the lone occupant of the car, which crashed around 3 a.m. at the intersection of 1500 Park Springs Boulevard. and 4000 Shady Valley Drive, police said. Investigators determined that car was speeding south on Park Springs and slid in a pole where the road curves in front of the golf course.

Habala, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said alcohol could have also been a factor in the crash.

Habala's accident was one of six major crashes in Arlington from midnight to 6 a.m., police said. Fort Worth police reported 51 major accidents for the same time period.
