Some years ago, I considered joining the NRA. Then, that organization supported the owning of assault weapons and related hardware.

My decision to abstain was solidified when its leader stated that to prevent murder in schools we should provide armed guards -- in every school! But not a word regarding the outlawing of virtual weapons of mass destruction.

NRA head Wayne LaPierre does not consider that one bent on killing children (or others) need not enter a school to do so. Opportunities abound to attack people, such as on school buses, shopping malls or a theater. In fairness to the NRA, it did not create the culture in this country that idolizes violence and feasts on music, magazines, movies and other media that glamorize profanity and moral or sexual degradation.

This we may lay at the doorstep of our "entertainment" industry, which knows no bounds to amass the almighty dollar -- all in the name of free speech.
