Regarding "Activists push for arming teachers" on Thursday: As a classroom teacher and parent of two school-aged children, I am concerned about the idea that "arming classroom teachers" is a possible solution to prevent future tragedies such as Newtown, Conn.

This idea is ridiculous, as I would have to pause and say (to a potential shooter), "Excuse me while I go to my locked cabinet, unlock it, get the gun, load it, then prepare myself for action."

On the other hand, teachers with guns immediately available could mean more than 150 guns in my school. In a school of nearly 3,000 students, a group who chose to overpower teachers and take those guns could, potentially, ring up a death toll of epic proportions.

I feel perfectly safe with one well-trained officer in my building and security procedures in place.
