Arlington Bowie 69, Denton Guyer 45: Jeremy Senglin had 20 points and Malcolm Hughes recorded 16 points to lead the Volunteers to a first round win over Denton Guyer at Wilkerson-Greines AC during the FWISD Coca-Cola Classic.
The Wildcats (11-4) took a 16-6 lead with 3:04 in the first quarter but the Volunteers went on a 17-0 run that ended with 6:00 remaining in the second quarter to make the score 23-16.
The Volunteers (13-1) dominated the second quarter by outscoring the Wildcats 21-8 to take a 37-24 halftime lead. Senglin had nine points in the second quarter.
The Wildcats would cut the score to 44-34 with 4:30 in the third quarter but that would be the closest the Wildcats would get within the Volunteers. The Volunteers would end the third quarter going on a 13-4 run. Sean Choate finished with 13 points for the Wildcats and Kevin Hervey had 10 points for the Volunteers.
The next game for the Volunteers will be against Fort Worth Wyatt at 9:30 a.m. today. Wyatt received a first round bye for the tournament.
Mansfield Timberview 71, Keller Fossil Ridge 45: Alex Robinson had 18 points and Chris Owens recorded 16 points to help Mansfield Timberview earn a first round win.
The Wolves (15-1) jumped out to a 10-2 lead but the Panthers (4-8) were able to tie the score 15-15 heading into the second quarter. After that the Wolves defense dominated as they didn't allow the Panthers to score until 3:03 in the second quarter with the score already at 26-17. The Wolves went into halftime up 32-22.
Coming out of halftime, the Panthers didn't score their first field goal of the second half until 1:12 in the third quarter. By then the Wolves were leading 49-29. The Wolves will play Fort Worth Arlington Heights at 11 a.m. today.
Arlington Heights 68, Denton 58: Demontre McFarland put up 18 points and Justin Hemphill added 17 to spearhead the Yellow Jackets to victory.
The Yellow Jackets (7-4) led the entire game and gained the lead earlier on as they opened up the game on a 11-2 run. Denton (2-8) cut the score at 45-39 with 1:50 in the third quarter but the Yellow Jackets went on a 13-0 run to seal the win. Ryan Daniels for Denton had 15 points.
Austin LBJ 82, Midlothian 65: Austin LBJ showed why their ranked No. 2 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches in Class 4A as they steamrolled Midlothian behind David Smith's 13 points.
The Jaguars (18-0) lead the whole game and the closest Midlothian (6-7) got was at the 3 minute mark in the second quarter as the Jaguars led 18-15. After that, the Jaguars went on a 24-0 run that was finally snapped with 5:56 in the third quarter. The Jaguars will face Garland Lakeview Centennial at 12:30 p.m. today.
Garland Lakeview Centennial 82, Kileen 65: Lakeview fought off Kileen's Brian Long, who finished the game with 30 points, to win comfortably.
Charles Beauregard of Lakeview scored 22 points to lead the team in scoring. Lakeview (12-3) took a 51-41 lead with 3:18 in the third quarter but Kileen (6-5) would cut the score to 57-52 with 6 minutes remaining. But behind the play of Beauregard who scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, it would be the closest Kileen would get within threating Lakeviews lead.
