Blame ourselves

As we watch the Washington theater that passes for governance and wring our hands about chaos and lack of compromise, why expect anything else?

Every election brings the cry: Throw all the bums out (except mine). In 2012, 91 percent of congressional incumbents were re-elected, despite congressional approval ratings in the low teens. That is, they were re-elected by the 57.5 percent of Americans who took time to vote.

Despite an abysmal legislative and leadership record, we continue to re-elect the likes of my representative, Kenny Marchant.

Our new senator, Ted Cruz, was elected as a Tea Party favorite and will be a voice of far-right conservatives. Countering that, Sen. Scott Brown of Massachusetts, an independent-thinking Republican, was ousted by the super-liberal Democrat Elizabeth Warren.

In the House, a handful of ultra-conservatives threatens to not only destroy the remnants of the Republican Party, but to lead us, like lemmings, over the fiscal cliff.

Anytime Americans wonder how we got here, look in the mirror. We elected the scourges in Washington based on the platform they campaigned for.
