Deadly sin

The disastrous Nov. 24 fire in a garment factory in Bangladesh was not only a terrible tragedy but also a call for personal responsibility.

When I learned that a particular store label was produced in that factory, I went to my closet and checked out the labels on the jeans. One had that label! I was forced to acknowledge my complicity in this disaster.

What we buy, where we shop and how much we pay has implications of life and death significance.

Free trade without the requirement of human rights benefits the privileged few and extracts a heavy price on those producing the goods or services.

As Gandhi reminds us, "commerce without morality" is one of the seven deadly social sins.
