Lake Worth school district campuses will be closed today "in light of recent national events," Superintendent Janice Cooper wrote in a letter to parents.

The district will use one of its "weather days" to cover the day off.

"You may have heard on the news, there was a bomb threat on Tuesday in our district.

It was a hoax, but it was disturbing to our parents especially," Cooper said in an interview Thursday.

"This was just a chance to give our parents a little relief. We don't have any reason to believe there's anything else going on."

Two extra days are built into districts' schedules, which they usually use for bad weather but can use for other reasons, a spokesman for the Texas Education Agency said.

Classes will resume after the holiday break on Jan. 8.
