Saturday, after a day of deer hunting, my two friends and I sat around the table after supper. The subject of gun control came up in light of the massacre prominent in the news.

All of us are avid hunters; two are NRA members. Between us, we own about 24 shotguns, rifles and pistols in various calibers and gauges suited to the type of hunting we do. Only I own a weapon that doesn't fit our mold: a 9 mm, high-capacity pistol, for which I have no earthly use.

We reached the conclusion that none of us needed or desired a weapon designed for the purpose of killing other folks en masse. Although we enjoy hunting and take pride in our skill with firearms and in our guns, it would not bother any of us to ban assault weapons. Those weapons give gun enthusiasts a bad name.
