HALTOM CITY -- Apparently, the sound of a car backfiring led to a one-hour lockdown at Birdville Elementary School this morning.

The school at 3126 Bewley Street in Haltom City was put on alert about 8 a.m. after a report of possible shots fired, according to a message posted on the school website.

“There were no shots fired in the school building and no one was injured,” the message stated.

Administrators later said that the sound apparently was a car backfiring.

Police were at the scene. As a precaution, the elementary school and the Shannon Learning Center were placed on lockdown.

Many parents elected to take their children home after the lockdown.
