Granbury police said Saturday that extra officers are being assigned to the high school next week because of a reported threat to security, which both the deputy chief and the school district superintendent attributed to online chatter that followed the school shootings in Newton, Conn.

"Although there are numerous rumors being passed around the social media sites, these rumors have not been confirmed," said Alan Hines, the deputy chief. "The Granbury Police Department is taking all reports received as fact and will investigate the report to determine if it is real or fictitious.

"Any report received that is a violation of the law will be pursued through the appropriate court," he said.

Neither police nor school officials disclosed details of the threat.

"Although these rumors may not be confirmed, we take seriously any threat against our schools -- whether it is real or a prank," Superintendent James Largent said in a post on the Granbury district's Facebook page.

Largent urged students to report suspicious behavior and rumors.
