I agree with everything in Jay Tree's Tuesday letter, "True Americans." The only thing he did not mention was the millions of dollars that the public school system spends to teach English to non-English-speaking children.
Before a child starts public school, he/she should be able to converse in English. Once my grandchildren started public school, I found out that was not the case. I attend all of their school events, and while we are waiting for an event to start, I will often speak to or attempt to be friendly with someone sitting beside me and the usual comment I get is "No English."It seems extremely ungrateful that they would not take advantage of free ESL classes that are being offered. The children of English-speaking residents could use that waste of money in many ways to benefit all of the children in public school.-- Shirley Wiley, Fort WorthHave more to add? News tip? Tell us
