A jury sentenced a 35-year-old man to 40 years in prison Friday for killing his father by shooting him in the face with a shotgun in April 2011.

Daniel Gary, of Bolivar, was convicted of murder Thursday in the death of his father William Gary.

William Gary, 65, was found dead in a barn on the family's property on Farm Road 2450 in Bolivar, about 10 miles northwest of Denton. Sheriff's deputies went to the residence after Daniel Gary told a friend that he had shot his father.

Authorities arrested Gary after he left the family's home in the small community of Bolivar on April 11, 2011, drove to Lake Dallas and confessed to a friend that he had shot his father. Bolivar is about 10 miles northwest of Denton.

Gary had been living with his father.

The friend called Lake Dallas police shortly before 9 p.m. and said Gary had showed up at his home in the 400 block of Lake Dallas Drive and said he had shot his father.

Gary was taken into custody, and a shotgun was found in his vehicle, authorities said.

Denton County Sheriff's Department deputies went to the Garys' residence at 15038 Farm Road 2450 and found the body of William Gary in a barn just north of the residence, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Daniel Gary has a long criminal history. He has been arrested 18 times since 1995 by eight different law enforcement agencies, according to Denton County criminal court records.

Six of the 18 arrests were for drug possession, and four were for driving while intoxicated, according to the court records.
