Having never drawn a penny from the government for unemployment, food stamps or welfare or visited the food bank except as a volunteer, I find it hard to accept the number of unemployed.

How did this happen? I look at the morning paper and there are columns of job ads. Why are they not filled?

I asked a man recently why he was unemployed. His response was that he could not find a job in his field. Then I asked why he didn't take something less and get what he really wanted when it becomes available.

His reply was, "If I go to work, I will make less than on unemployment." Why would anyone go through that?

The only way this is going to get turned around is to stop paying those benefits.

When I retired from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1974, jobs were hard to find. A man told me, "You are overqualified for the job I have available."

I replied, "I need a job." He handed me a broom.

Six years later, I was national sales manager. He never regretted the offer. I never regretted taking the job.
