FORT WORTH -- When 83-year-old Roscoe Smith wandered off from his east side home early Monday morning, the temperature was in the mid-30s. The wind chill was in the mid-20s and dropping.
Smith, who has memory lapses and a history of walking away from home, was nowhere to be found.Several blocks away, in the 5700 block of East Rosedale Street, police Sgt. Zoran Petrovic stopped at a brush-filled ditch along the side of the road and decided to take a look."He basically walked the ditch and found [Smith] covered in brush," said Sgt. Pedro Criado, a Fort Worth police spokesman. "If it wasn't for him, he probably wouldn't have made it."Smith was taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia. He had cuts and scratches, and scrapes to his head. His condition could not be learned later Monday.Bill Hanna, 817 -390-7698Twitter: @fwhannaHave more to add? News tip? Tell us
