Thank you for the tremendous story about Robert Hughes Sr. Saturday (See: "Welcome home, Coach")

His statements give us all clear direction.

He said, "Back in the day when you went to dinner on the church grounds, the only ice cream I had was vanilla. Always what I wanted from the players was vanilla." He wanted the student players to work, and he noted the critical importance of parents being parents and not friends to their children.

If just those three recommendations could be infused in the hearts and souls of both young people and parents today, what a different education system we might have: (1) Be happy with vanilla, (2) Remember, you have to work, and work hard, and (3) Parents, you are not your child's best friend; you are their mom or dad, their leader, the disciplinarian, the guide and the model.

Thank you, Coach Hughes.
