If snow flurries don't materialize Monday morning, the 26-degree temperatures North Texans will awake to Tuesday morning will likely remind them what month it is.

Jamie Gudmestad, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said temperatures will reach a mild 70 degrees Sunday before an afternoon cold front arrives and drops temperatures to 50 degrees by sunset.

There is a 20 percent chance of rain in the morning.

The cold front, expected to arrive about 2 p.m., will also bring winds of 20 to 25 mph as temperatures drop.

Monday morning will start out with a chilly 32 degrees and the day will not warm much, with a high expected in the 40s.

Gudmestad said the chance of snow Monday will be about 20 percent.

"If it does snow, it's going to be light flurries," she said. "The ground is a bit too warm right now for it to really stick."

After skies clear throughout the day Monday, temperatures will begin to drop, reaching 26 degrees by morning.

Elsewhere in the state, light snow with accumulations of up to an inch was possible for Parmer, Castro and Bailey counties along the Texas-New Mexico border west of Lubbock, the weather service said.

Temperatures across the South Plains were expected to reach only the 40s Sunday, with highs even lower for Monday and low temperatures dropping to the teens.

For the Guadalupe Mountains area, forecasters in Midland-Odessa issued a high wind watch for Sunday with 30 to 45 mph winds gusting to near 65 mph.

And for much of West Texas, from the Big Bend all the way north, forecasters advised residents to protect sensitive plants, pets and pipes.

Only the Rio Grande Valley in far South Texas, where temperatures were in the 80s on Saturday, was likely to escape the brunt of the arctic blast.
