Grand Prairie bicyclist succumbs to injuries received Nov. 27

A Grand Prairie bicyclist died early Saturday from injuries he received Nov 27 after being hit from behind by a motorist suspected of being intoxicated.

Calvin Washington, 53, died at 12:24 a.m. in the operating room at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, according to the medical examiner.

The crash occurred in the 1000 block of Polo Road in Grand Prairie.

Investigators determined that Washington was westbound in the left lane of Polo Road when he was struck from behind by a 2008 Kia sedan driven by Matthew Bonnette, 60, of Grand Prairie.

Washington was thrown over the top of the car during the collision. He was taken by air ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in critical condition.

Police said Washington was wearing a helmet.

Bonnette was arrested at the scene at charged with suspicion of intoxication assault. Police have upgraded the charges to intoxication manslaughter.

It was the 12th traffic fatality in Grand Prairie this year.
