SOUTHLAKE — The greatest season in Birdville High School's 14-year football history ended Saturday afternoon, curtailed by the powerful Denton Guyer offense.
Guyer, which has won 12 in a row after two opening losses, won the Class 4A Division I Region I final 52-42 at Carroll's Dragon Stadium and moved into a state semifinal against Tyler John Tyler (13-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Midlothian ISD Stadium.
Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard, headed for the University of Texas, ran for 163 yards, threw for 172 (completing 11 of 15 passes) and accounted for five touchdowns. He ran 11 and 8 yards for scores, found Ellis Jefferson on passes of 43 and 6 yards and Nati Maki for 3 yards.
DJ Breedlove sprinted 84 yards to open the scoring for Guyer and Richard Whitaker ended it with a 44-yard run. The Wildcats had a 14-0 lead after just 3:52 of play and Byrdville got no closer than seven points twice.
Xavier Turner ran for 146 yards for Birdville, scoring on runs of 2 and 35 and faking out two defenders on a 15-yard scoring pass from Justin Martin. But the Hawks, despite 248 passing yards, fell after 13 victories.
Martin (17 of 24) had three touchdown passes -- the one to Turner, 7 yards to Barrett Shaw and 11 yards to Sam Northey. Martin also ran for 65 yards. Northey also had a touchdown pass, 58 yards to Shaw, on one of several trick plays -- double passes, triple reverse -- by Birdville.
