Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Price Brent was the driver in a fatal accident early Saturday morning that killed his teammate Jerry Brown. Brent was arrested for intoxication manslaughter at 4:30 a.m. and booked into the Irving city jail.A spokesman for the Irving police department confirmed that a fatal accident occurred at the 1400 block of the north service road of state highway 114 at 2:21 a.m. early Saturday morning.We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerrys family and all of those who knew him and loved him."Brents agent Peter Schaefer declined comment.According to Irving police, the 24-year-old Brent was driving at a high rate of speed when his car hit the outside curb causing the vehicle to flip at least one time before coming to rest in the middle of the service road. When police arrived, Brent was responsive and able to speak with officers. Brown, 25, was the passenger in the car and was unresponsive. He was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.The officers at the scene believed alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash. Brent performed field sobriety tests and based on the results, he was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Brent was also taken to an area hospital for a mandatory blood draw and later booked on one count of intoxication manslaughter.Results of the blood draw will likely take weeks, the police said.During an afternoon news conference, the police said when they arrived on the scene, Brent was dragging Brown from the vehicle, described as a 2007 Mercedes Benz. Police said the vehicle was on fire, but not fully engulfed.Brent had a problem with driving under the influence long before Saturday mornings fatality.Brent was arrested after his sophomore season at Illinois for driving under the influence and suspended from the team indefinitely by then coach Ron Zook in February of 2009. He returned the team for junior season.The Cowboys drafted him in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Supplemental Draft. The Cowboys made a roster move Saturday morning before departing for Sundays game against the Cincinnati Bengals, signing defensive tackle Robert Callaway from the practice squad and putting cornerback Orlando Scandrick on injured reserve.Its the second time in the past decade that an active Cowboys player was involved in a traffic fatality.Cornerback Dwayne Goodrich was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed two people in 2003. He was convicted on two counts of criminally negligent homicide and served eight years in prison before being released in 2011.Brent, who has started four games in place of the injured Jay Ratliff, has 35 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble. His forced fumble against Philadelphia last week was returned 50 yards by rookie Morris Claiborne to seal the Cowboys 38-33 win over the Eagles.Brown, a linebacker, was signed to the practice squad on October 24.Susan McFarland contributed to this report.
