As a recently retired, 38-year veteran of education, I had the opportunity to start many new school years. Over each I talked of the very "unique" opportunity that the start of the new year offered us. I said that those elements that we faced at that moment would never present themselves to us again.

President Obama has that same opportunity and responsibility on a world-wide scale. Now is the time to "reach across the aisle" for the good of the country and the world. It is time for a change in America to a point where we make appointments not strictly by party, but by choosing the individual who best can help accomplish our goal.

During these next four years, seek solutions. It is time to break the filibuster. We need only to look at the "Manhattan Project" to see evidence of having a problem that needed solving and having some of the best and brightest minds, regardless of political connection, come together to achieve it. That is the type effort we need now.
